What containing means here
This tool searches for a consecutive character sequence inside dictionary words. If you enter "str", results must include those three letters side by side in that order. It does not mean the letters can appear separately in different positions. For non-consecutive rack searches, use the word finder or words from letters tool.
Consecutive letter searches are useful for spelling patterns, word fragments, and puzzle clues where the middle of a word is known. They are also helpful when you are studying clusters such as "ough", "tion", "str", "thr", or "qu".
Combining sequence and edge filters
The contains page also supports optional starts-with and ends-with filters. That lets you express a pattern such as words containing "ar" that start with "c", or words containing "tion" that end with "s". Add exact length when a crossword-style answer has a fixed number of blanks, or use a range when you want to browse.
The implementation uses simple substring, prefix, and suffix checks rather than uncontrolled regular expressions. That keeps the search predictable and fast while avoiding risky pattern parsing.
Puzzle solving and vocabulary practice
Letter clusters are one of the fastest ways to recognize words. Common clusters can anchor the rest of the spelling, especially when vowels are hard to place. In word games, a contains search is useful when a board tile sequence must appear in the final play. For vocabulary practice, compare the words around the same cluster and notice which prefixes and endings appear repeatedly.
Common clusters to test
Try clusters such as "str", "thr", "ch", "sh", "tion", "ough", "ace", and "qu". Some clusters mostly appear near the beginning of words, some often appear near the end, and some can sit in the middle. Adding starts-with or ends-with filters helps you explore those positions without changing the core contains search.
A contains search can also help when you remember only part of a spelling. If you know a word has "cei" or "eigh" in the middle, search that exact sequence and compare the surrounding letters. This is useful for spelling practice because it turns a vague memory into a focused list.
When contains is not the right tool
If you have a rack of separate letters, use the word finder instead. "Contains str" means s, t, and r appear together in that order. It does not find every word that contains s somewhere, t somewhere else, and r elsewhere. Keeping that distinction clear prevents misleading results.
